Ruth Edge and Two Thyme big win in Germany
Ruth Edge and Two Thyme achieved the ultimate international eventing success with a tremendous win in the 4**** CCI at Luhmuhlen in Germany.
Re-routed from Badminton where they were ‘best of the Brits’ after dressage but decided against running across country because of the much-publicised poor ground conditions, Ruth and Two Thyme travelled to Germany in peak form.
Winners of the British Open Championship in 2004, Ruth has produced Two Thyme for owners Phil and Maureen Smith through the higher grades and with her acknowledged expertise in the dressage phase, rode a fluent test to lie third.
She then produced what knowledgeable onlookers described as an ‘awesome’ cross country round adding just 1.6 time penalties to move up into the lead at the end of the second day.
With the showjumping phase jumped in reverse order, Ruth was last to go and followed a hugely popular clear round from German rider Dirk Schrade and Gadget de la Cere AA that left the atmosphere electric.
Two Thyme kept his concentration extremely well, just collecting 4 penalties for an error at the water fence and Ruth’s well judged round added a further 2 time penalties to give them victory by the slender margin of 0.4 penalties.
Ruth said afterwards, “It’s been a dream of mine to win a 4**** and it still hasn’t quite sunk in yet. Two Thyme was awesome, just amazing. I was proud of him all week as he really tried his best in every phase.
“With the help of easibed plus I know my horses arrive at a 3DE at the peak of fitness and I’ve got total peace of mind about their wellbeing.”
Two Thyme’s owners were obviously delighted with his win, Phil commenting, “We’ve always known that Ruth and Two Thyme had it in them to achieve this big win, but it is still a great joy to see them on top at Luhmuhlen. We are so proud and delighted for the whole team.”
Two Thyme will now enjoy a well-earned break with summer grass and sunshine to recharge his batteries.
