RUTH EDGE ENJOYS ‘STUNNING’ DHI CHALLENGE WIN
Although still better known for her international eventing successes, Ruth Edge is beginning to match her cross country expertise with winning performances in the dressage arena.
She produced two tests described as “absolutely stunning” on her own five-year-old Sandro Hit gelding Shadowfax to win the £5000 DHI Challenge. The Challenge is a competition for horses previously bought at the Brightwells European Sale of Dressage Horses and is held annually in conjunction with the sale.
Ruth bought the 17hh Shadowfax a year ago from Andrew Gould and he is already on the Equine Pathway for horses considered to have Olympic potential. Third in the 2007 Novice Open National Championship, he has qualified for the Winter Regionals at Elementary Open, Elementary Music and Medium Open.
The DHI Challenge Judges awarded Ruth the highest (9.3) of the morning’s qualifying scores, and although Shadowfax broke in the simple change at the end of the freestyle to music section, which determined the final placings later in the day, they secured the £5000 prize with another peerless mark, this time of 9.5.
Subsequently declaring her ambition to “compete in the Olympics in both dressage and eventing”, Ruth says Shadowfax “always wants to be the centre of attention, loves life and loves performing.”
Asked what her plans are for Shadowfax in 2008, she says simply: “To train him to do what he can to the best of his ability.” Ruth trains with Judy Harvey and Bert Rutten and Shadowfax will definitely be one to watch out for next season as he continues his winning progress up the grades.
