Tentpegging Gains easibed Support
In what must be one of the most unusual recent sponsorship deals, members of the British Tentpegging Team secured support from easibed for their World Championships in South Africa.
With origins stretching back to the mounted regiments centuries ago, the traditional ‘skill-at-arms’ of tentpegging was used for various purposes, from rapidly collapsing tents in enemy encampments to disabling enemy war elephants.
Today it is a global sport which has developed from those colourful roots. No longer exclusive to the military, it requires a mounted participant, competing either as an individual or a team member, to take a tent peg from the ground at a gallop, with a lance or a sword. It’s an exciting spectator sport and is now on the brink of recognition by the British Equestrian Federation (BDF) and the FEI, with the possibility of becoming a spectator sport for the London 2012 Olympics.
Teams from 17 countries entered the World Championships at the end of April, including India, believed by many to be the origin of the sport, Jordan, Canada, The Netherlands, USA, Pakistan and Oman.
Announcing the sponsorship, easibed National Sales Manager Ian McColville said: “We are always interested in talking to anyone with a high-profile, in this case international, sponsorship opportunity and tentpegging really caught our imagination. It’s fast, very skilled, has fabulous spectator appeal and we see it as an ideal addition to our sponsorship portfolio.
The members of the British Team are Captain Mark Avison, WO1 Gascoyne, WO2 Treverrow, WO2 Mark Watson, PC Paul Brown and Mr John Dudeney
